Northamptonshire's combination of excellent manufacturing capabilities, strong academic research and developmental support from high technology companies means the county is widely regarded as an emerging European centre for the Environmental Technologies. The industry employs around 1600 people in the area and is home to a growing number of waste management focused companies such as The Waste Recycling Group, Cleansing Service Group Ltd, Shanks and Cory Environmental Ltd.

Northamptonshire is also recognised as the leading UK knowledge centre for the waste management industry

The University of Northampton, which boasts a recognised centre of excellence, has won £ 1.5 million investment support from the SITA Environmental Trust to increase its support for new and expanding companies.

Northampton is home to the Chartered Institution of Waste Management (CIWM), the UK's body for waste management professionals, which moved from London to take advantage of cost effective property prices and a central, well connected UK location.

The Composting Association and the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board also operate from Northampton. This established cluster of expertise makes Nothamptonshire the ideal location for environmental technology companies to grow and expand into new markets, tap into a skilled labour base and benefit from cutting edge innovation.
