Over £5 million has already been spent on the latest casino to locate in Northampton, with more plans for development ahead. Situated in Commercial Street in the town centre, it is the latest venture of international business tycoon Sol Kerzner.
Due to open in 2007, the casino is the first venture into the British gaming scene vy Kerzner International, following on from multi-million pound developments in other regions around the world, including sites in such exotic locations as the Bahamas, America and South Africa.
Tobin Prior, head if Kerzner International's operations in the UK, spoke to Northampton Today about the move, highlighting the advantages such a venue would bring to the town: "When we were looking at the UK and planning what we could do, we saw that Northampton would be a good market... It's going to be a very upmarket place".
The four storey casino building has undergone massive demolition and construction since work began at the site. Designed to resemble the former brewery and auction house that once occupied the site, the new casino will be the company's 'toe in the water' with regard to the UK. Under current UK legislation, so-called Vegas-style 'super casinos' are still prohibited. Speaking about the legislation, Mr Prior added "By our standards this is not large, although it is a very nice building... Until the legislation allows it, our only opportunity is to do something like this."
The new casino will become the third in the town, following two Gala-owned casinos at Sol Central and Regent Square.

05/05/2006 - New Aerobatics Team Launch at Sywell Aerodrome

Sywell yesterday witnessed a breathtaking display of stunts as new aerobatics team The Blades launched in the county. Former Red Arrows and a Belgian aerobatics champion make up the team, along with four cutting-edge planes worth £1.2 million, and have chosen the Northamptonshire airfield as their base.
The new planes mean The Blades are capable of reaching up to 10G - 10 time less or more that the force of gravity - which enables tighter movement in the sky and closer proximity to the crowds below.
Already standing out from other outfits around the UK, The Blades will further add to their appeal by becoming the first aerobatics team in the country offering to take passengers along for the ride, albeit a less stomach-churning experience than the tricks used for displays.
2Excel Aviation, the firm behind The Blades, was at the event. Speaking to Northampton Today, Chris Norton, the operations director and former RAF Harrier Flight Commander commented: "Northamptonshire is right in the middle of the country and Sywell is a beautiful airfield... It has character and, from our perspective, it has good psace. We can go ten miles around the clock, in any direction, so we can minimise the noise to the local environment".

01/05/2006 - CIP Wins $1.7 Million for Uncooled Laser Programme

A UK collaboration involving the Centre for Integrated Photonics (CIP) and Bookham has been awarded $1.7 million to develop new technologies for uncooled operation of InP-based photonic components. Also working wit Loughborough Surface Analysis (LSA) and the universities of Surrey and Sheffield, the funding from the DTI will be used over a two and a half year project entitled "Extended Temperature Electronics".
The first aim of the project is to fabricate a range of aluminium containing active devices that can operate at high temperatures. These deives willi nclude fixed and turnable laser, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), superluminescent diodes and avalanche photodiodes. The other goal of the project is to develop MOCVD processes for the growth of ruthenium-doped semi-insulating current blocking layers that could lead to high speed, high power lasers and SOAs that can operate without cooling, and should enable reductions in power consumption and allow closer stacking of optical interfaces.
CIP and Bookham will be responsible for the growth and device testing, and will contribute to the structural design and modelling along with Surrey and Sheffield Universities.
