FANS FLOCK TO ROCKINGHAM FOR FREE BRITISH TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
FANS of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship descended on Rockingham today (Thursday, March 19) for a FREE sneak preview of the starting grid at the official BTCC Media Day.
The championship gets underway on April 5 but more than 1100 members of the public were treated to some high-speed action FREE of charge as the class of 2009 was unveiled at the Northamptonshire circuit.
The teams were out in force testing their highly-tuned 300bhp racing machines for the first time this season, including VX Racing’s reigning champion Fabrizio Giovanardi and the 2008 Independent winner Team RAC’s Colin Turkington.
Fans were able to soak up the pre-season atmosphere and collect autographs with a visit to the paddock area as well check out the new cars on the grid as they watched the high-speed action trackside and from the pit garage roof.
Rockingham Director Charlotte Orton, said: “There is always a great atmosphere at the BTCC Media Day and this year’s event was no different. We are really pleased so many people took advantage of free entry and came along.
“We were also delighted to welcome children from across the East Midlands who were taking part in our schools competition. For most of them it was their first visit to Rockingham and their first taste of motorsport.
“These children are the motor racing fans and participants of the future and we hope they thoroughly enjoyed their time with us. The BTCC Media Day is the perfect showcase for the UK’s premier racing series and an excellent opportunity to remind people of the fantastic facilities we have.”
More than 120 members of the media attended the event’s morning session to catch all the pre-season gossip, collect their interviews with the teams and drivers as well as gain valuable footage and photographs of the 2009 cars in action.
The seasoned-pros were joined by around 200 cub-reporters from 13 primary schools from across the East Midlands who visited the circuit as part of this year’s school competition launched in partnership by Rockingham and the BTCC.
The youngsters have to produce a newspaper based on the pre-season curtain-raiser for the UK’s largest racing series, which attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators to its 10-round meeting as well as millions of television viewers.
More than 300 race professionals were on hand from drivers to mechanics, team owners to PR people for the seven-to-11-year-olds to interview and photograph to help them gather all the information they needed to put their newspapers together.
The competition will be judged by an expert panel headed up by the Editor of Auto Express magazine. They will be looking for the best overall newspaper, the best individual photograph, article and headline.
The overall winning school who produces the best newspaper will receive a once-in-a-lifetime visit from two of the top touring car drivers. A digital camera will be presented to the winners of the best photograph and article, while the winner of the best headline will receive team merchandise.
In addition, all the winners will receive a free ticket for themselves and an accompanying adult, to come and watch the drivers battle it out at Rockingham in the penultimate rounds of the championship on September 19/20.
Advance tickets for Rockingham’s BTCC meeting are on sale. Race day tickets cost just £23 for adults while weekend passes are £28 – a saving of 20 per cent on gate admission prices. The circuit operates a free admission policy for children aged 15 and under.
These can be purchased via the ticket hotline on 01536 500500 or at www.rockingham.co.uk – the official Rockingham website.
