Northamptonshire welcomes Kenmark from Taiwan
Kenmark, a Taiwanese firm specialising in the production of state-of-the-art digital visual technology through the manufacture of liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions, has announced it will set up its main European facility in Autumn 2009 at the Corby site.
Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited welcomes the overseas company to the county and the creation of approximately 500 jobs in the manufacturing industry for the local community. Kenmark’s investment in Northamptonshire as a place for its employees to live and work reflects the county’s longer term aim to attract new business investment and the creation of new jobs and housing.
The company will make the 150,000 square foot facility in Corby its home after choosing Northamptonshire as its base due to the excellent transport links and its central UK position, making it the perfect location for easy distribution. The availability of a skilled labour market was another attraction.
Once open, Kenmark will become one of Western Europe’s major LCD TV assembly businesses. The TVs that the company will manufacture will help meet demand for the digital switchover, which is set to be complete by 2012.
Paul Southworth, Chairman, Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited, said: “Many local and regional partners have been working together to make this project a reality. We are thrilled to be able to welcome such a prestigious company to the county. Kenmark’s choice of location is proof that Northamptonshire boasts an enviable offering for both national and international businesses. We look forward to more companies following Kenmark’s lead to settle in the county which has been chosen by the government as one of the UK’s designated growth areas.”
Jim Harker, Leader, Northamptonshire County Council and Vice Chair Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited said: “This is very welcome news in these challenging economic times. Northamptonshire is a county which offers a wonderful location to live, work, invest and learn; we are delighted Kenmark will be setting up here, bringing employment and investment to our county.”
Phil Hope, Labour MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire, commented: “This is fantastic news that didn’t happen by chance. The huge effort that we have put in to turn Corby around over the last ten years has helped to attract this massive new investment and jobs for the town.
“Corby continues to go from strength to strength. Although the global recession has affected jobs locally this new industry creating new jobs for local people shows that Corby is well placed as the economy starts to recover.”
Councillor Pat Fawcett, Leader of Corby Borough Council, said: “This is another great day for Corby and it is fantastic that we can celebrate the announcement of 500 new jobs at a time of global economic downturn. Corby beat off stiff international competition to attract Kenmark, which is proof of how successful the town's regeneration is and highlights the confidence that companies have in our future.
“We welcome Kenmark to Corby and wish them a very long and prosperous future here. I would like to thank all of the partners involved who have worked hard to make this happen.”
Simon Evans, Chief Executive of North Northants Development Company, commented: “This major investment in Corby is fantastic news for local residents and represents further endorsement of the town and North Northamptonshire as a long-term commercial location. To become the main European manufacturing base for Kenmark, a global company of considerable standing, is a real coup for Corby and I congratulate all the partners that made this happen.”
Bryan Jackson, emda’s Chairman said: “This is a great example of what Regional Development Agencies can do to help bring investment into the East Midlands. I’m delighted that Kenmark has chosen Corby, and at the job prospects this will bring for the local population, particularly at this difficult time for the economy. This is proof that manufacturing is alive and kicking in the UK.”
